The Lankans have surely not been able to find a replacement for these two and filling up the big shoes has turned out to be a big problem. The country's performances have dropped drastically. After a complete whitewash from the Indians, the Sri Lankan team played Pakistan in the UAE but the performance did not seem to change much. The Lankans seemed to have come back on track after they won the test series, but no, the Pakistanis whitewashed the Lankans in the ODI and T20I series as the visitors performed poorly. The Sri Lankan cricket is going through a very tough phase, probably the worst. Let's look at few of the key reasons why Sri Lankan Cricket is declining:

1) Retirement of key players

The retirement of the legendary duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene has hit Sri Lankan cricket big time. Sri Lanka has not been able to cope up with their retirement. Finding players of their level might be difficult but they had to retire someday. They've not yet found a duo to fill up the big shoes of these both.

2) Poor domestic structure

Sri Lanka has one of the worst domestic structures in the world. The players who perform well in the domestic leagues consistently are not given a chance in the main team. All the starts from the past had emerged from the club cricket structure but presently, the focus is more on inter-provincial cricket. In the process, they’re killing inter-club cricket, which was once the base of Lankan cricket.

3) Unsettled combination and non-performing youngsters

The Lankans keep changing their team combination quite frequently and this has resulted in the lack of coordination between the players. The team's future depends on the youngsters and their performance but the youngsters have let the team down. Few players look promising but have not given the team consistent contributions.

4) Coach Selection

There were many questions raised after Nic Pothas was selected as the fielding coach of the Sri Lankan team. After all the criticism, he was shifted to the Under-19 team. However, he was again promoted to the senior team and when Graham Ford suddenly quit as the coach of the Lankan team, he was made the head coach of the team. This was indeed a shocking decision with better options available. He clearly wasn't the best choice for the post.

5) Lack of quality spinners

One of the main concerns for the Lankans is the lack of some quality spinners. The best spinners in the squad are Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera who are 39 and 35 years old respectively. Age is catching up on these two and they'll be playing for a maximum of 3-4 years. The next best is Jeffrey Vandersay who is 25 years old but is not played much and this accounts for his inexperience. Sri Lanka has not been able to find successors for Sangakkara and Jayawardene in the batting and Muttiah Muralitharan in spin bowling. Sri Lanka has not used the young spinners well. All the focus is on the fast bowlers and the spin bowling is not been focused on. Spinners of the Asian teams are expected to be the best but to be honest, England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand have better spinners than the Lankans. There are not many quality spin bowlers in the squad and this is indeed a matter of concern for the Lankans

The Sri Lankan Cricket team will visit India later this year for a series of 3 Tests,ODIs and T20Is. As cricket lovers, we hope that the 1996 World Cup winners won’t let their supporters down and would get back to their old force which was competitive and compelling to watch.

ICC Cricket Rankings: How Do They Even Work?

Photo Credit: ESPNcricinfoTo say that ranking is 'just another number to me' and 'I don't care about them' is a clichéd statement. Ranking in any sport be it cricket or tennis is something that many people do not like, but there is no escape from it. ICC cricket rankings are the most widely recognized and accepted rankings in the world of cricket.

ICC also known as the International Cricket Council is the governing body in the cricket world. The game is controlled and administered by this governing body. ICC cricket rankings are widely accepted as official rankings in the cricket field. ICC gives rankings both to countries and individual cricket players. Rankings given to teams depend on two factors. The first factor is the performance of the team in the field and the second factor is the strength of the opposing team. This means that if any team wins against a strong opposition like Australia, their ranking can shoot up but if the win is against a low ranked team like Bangladesh, then there may be very little change in the rankings.

ICC cricket ranking are of various kinds. Broadly the rankings are divided in to one day international cricket ranking and test cricket ranking. Under both test cricket ranking and one day international ranking there is country ranking and individual player ranking. Within both the one day and test cricket rankings, players are individually ranked based on their performance and ability. So you can see the list of top ten batsmen, top ten bowlers and the top ten all-rounders in the world. The ICC provides a list of all top 100 players of the game for those who are really interested in knowing about players those who do not figure at the top ten.

Cricket fans eagerly await the release of the list of top players and the top playing cricket nation after every major tournament. Players are ranked on a scale of 0 points to 1000 points. ICC cricket rankings takes in to consideration the past performance of a player for giving rankings. So this means that even if a player is not active in the international cricket scene for a long time due to any reason, he can maintain his ranking at the top ten based on his previous exceptional performances.

Sachin Tendulkar of India was the best example of this. He was not active in the international cricket arena for about four to five months. However due to his consistent performances in the past he was in the list of top twenty players for a long time. The latest ICC cricket ranking has Pakistan as the top team for test matches and Australia as the best in one day internationals.

Author Bio Ella Wilson is a cricket fanatic. This was the scene that many believed would play home to one of the greatest Grand Finals of the modern era, with a large majority of headlines, conversation topics, and supporters favouring the Bulldogs. As it turned out, so too did the umpires.

To put it simply, the umpiring decisions made on the big day were horrendous, with the free kick count speaking for itself. 20-8 was the final free kick count, which saw the Dogs notch-up a whopping 12 more free kicks then the Swans, which is practically unheard of in football let alone a Grand Final. In fact, the last time there was a free kick differential of 12 or more in a Grand Final was 33 years ago back in 1983, when the Hawks thumped the Bombers by 83 points.

It is always hard blame the umpires for the result of a match; however, the Swans did not receive a free kick at all in the second or third quarter of football, which is when the game was in the balance and both teams threatened to tear it apart. To back up this horrid effort, the umpires turned a blind eye when Dogs skipper Easton Wood collected Swans midfielder Dan Hanneberry below the knees, which saw Hanneberry come straight off the field injured for what appears to be damage to his medial ligament.

This rule was implemented following a serious broken leg to fellow Swan Gary Rohan back in 2012, and the importance of the rule has been stressed heavily in the years following. Eric Mackenzie was brilliant in the Eagle's win over the Dockers. He managed 11 touches, 11 one percenters, and a rare goal to finish off his best game since missing 2015 through injury. Another man who was strong in defense was Marcus Adams. After a slow start, Adams was key to the Dogs 32 point comeback against the Hawks which saw them gain the lead at three-quarter time. Despite narrowly losing, Adams had 23 disposals and 15 marks, 4 of which were contested. Arguably the reason that the Hawks won could be put down to the work Ben Stratton did to hold the dangerous Jake Stringer to just 1 goal for the entire match. Stratton was one on one against Stringer on numerous occasions and continuously outplayed Stringer in the contest.

Half-Backs

The half-backs worked tirelessly this round and made this particular selection very difficult. Heath Shaw seemed to be everywhere in the defensive half against the Swans, grabbing himself 27 touches and 10 rebound 50s to start the Giants famous speedy counterattacks. Bachar Houli is another player who seemed to be everywhere in his match against the Crows, where he capped his game with a handy 37 possessions, 10 marks, and 5 tackles. Playing for the opposition, Daniel Talia was instrumental in the Crows win against the Tigers, holding Jack Riewoldt to merely 1 goal. The two-time Coleman Medalist was quiet under Talia's defending ability which put a serious dent in Richmond's goal kicking power.

Midfielders

The midfielders of the competition put on a show in round 3 with 22 players able to get 30+ disposals over the weekend. Leigh Montagna and Aaron Hall both finished with 40 touches, with Montagna reminding the AFL world that age is just a number and Hall showing the AFL world he is a midfield gun on the rise. Hall's teammate Gary Ablett continued to show his worth racking up 35 touches and applying 8 tackles against the Blues. Brandon Ellis was very close to being the third player of the round to reach 40 disposals, rounding off his brilliant game with 39 possessions and 11 marks. Jack Ziebell equaled Jude Bolton's AFL record of most tackles in a game of 19 tackles, whilst also getting a goal in North's 5 point win against the Demons. Also in that match, Max Gawn hit the record books, putting his name next to 5th on the 'most hit-outs in a game' list, coming away with 63 for the match. He also added 2 goals to the scoreboard which helped the Demons in bringing a 6-goal quarter time deficit down to just 5 points by the final siren.

Half-Forwards

Round 3 was the round of inspirational players, none more so than these men selected in the half-forward line this week. Dean Kent kicked 4 goals, including 3 in the final term, to get Melbourne within touching distance of an unbelievable upset against the Kangaroos. Another forward who finished with 4 goals was Tom J. Lynch, who is fast becoming one of the most elite tall forwards in the competition. Leading the Coleman Medal race, Lynch was also able to rack up 23 touches in his dominant performance against the Blues. However, all eyes were on the veteran, Brent Harvey, who returned to his vintage best kicking 6 goals to help pull North Melbourne over the line against the Demons.

Full-Forwards

Cyril Rioli was good on Sunday, kicking 3 majors and laying 6 tackles to tame the firing Dogs and prevent a 1-2 record heading into round 4. His former teammate in Lance Franklin was also influential in his respective game. 'Buddy' continued his excellent goal kicking, finishing with 4 goals for the third consecutive week, placing him second in the Coleman Medal race just 1 goal behind Tom Lynch. After an up-and-down career thus far, Jack Martin has now stamped his name as one of the best mid-sized forwards in the competition. Against the Blues, Martin managed 3 goals and 19 touches to help get his team towards the top end of the AFL Ladder.

The Bench

Despite not making their way on the field this week, it was impossible to leave these 4 players out of the team all together this week. The first man on the bench, Todd Goldstein, was excellent considering his direct opponent had 63 hit-outs. Goldstein had 38 hit-outs but also kicked a handy 5 goals to combine with 'Boomer' Harvey to kick 11 goals for the match. Jack Steven also kicked quite a few goals from the midfield against the Pies. Steven kick 3 goals and grabbed 30 touches to capture one of the upsets of the season thus far. Although playing in losing teams, Garrick Ibbotson and Luke Dahlhaus played very well for their sides this round. Ibbotson was great of half-back, picking up 25 possessions and 8 rebound 50s to help Freo remain competitive against the Eagles over in the West. Dahlhaus was also great for the Bulldogs, managing 33 disposals and 2 goals against the reigning premiers, the Hawks.

The Coach

Alan Richardson has had a roller-coaster ride of a career so far as coach of the Saints. From 110-point wins to 145-point losses, 'Richo' has experienced the highs and lows of being an AFL coach. Yet again, most wrote off the Saints this season, and they certainly were not expected to win against the Magpies on the weekend. However, against the odds, the Saints proved that they are no easy beats this year, and will push as hard as possible for a shock finals return. That can be put down to one man, Alan Richardson.

AFL Round 3 - The Best Shots

In our brand new piece 'The Best Shots', Anything Sports will hand select the best photos from the round, one image from each of the matches.
